Driving at night always is more difficult than daytime driving, and the challenges of night driving increase with age. Follow these tips to stay safe on the road at night, especially if you are over age 40.

1. Have a routine eye exam at least once every two years. Even minor changes in your vision can make a big difference in your night vision.

2. If you notice glare with your contact lenses at night, consider wearing glasses. Purchase lenses with anti-reflective coating for the sharpest night vision.

3. If you have early cataracts, pay close attention to your night vision. Even if your daytime vision still is relatively good, it might be time to consider cataract surgery if you start feeling unsafe driving at night.

4. Plan your trips before you leave home. Drive only on streets you know, and avoid dark, unlighted roadways. Limit your trips to places you can easily reach and that are close to home if you’re uncertain about your night vision.

5. Give yourself extra driving time. If there’s a chance road conditions might be bad, and don’t drive if you are stressed or tired.

6. Drive defensively. Leave plenty of space between you and the car in front of you, especially in bad weather.

7. Keep your windshield and headlights clean. Make sure you have plenty of windshield washer fluid and well-functioning wipers.

8. Keep your car in good repair. Also, have the alignment of your headlights checked periodically for optimum visibility.

9. Consider taking a safe driving class every few years. Some car insurance companies will lower your bill for completing such a course.
